The Ovation 2077AX-CCB Pro Legend is part of the ‘Legend’ series by Ovation. It has a deep contour body, is lightweight, and is ergonomically friendly– which means it’s designed with playability in mind. The contour of the body is designed to produce maximum resonance and depth in the sound, while also giving the feel of a smaller acoustic.
The back and sides (the ‘bowl’) are made from glass-mircrosphere impregnated lyrachord composite, and claims to give the projection, midrange and huge bottom end of a jumbo. It is also sculpted to fit your body in playing position whether standing or sitting, and is designed to improve top vibration and resonance.
Overall: (3.0 / 5)
This guitar also features the OP Pro Studio preamp, with a compression and a gain function, to get the extra sustain and boost from your playing. It has a 3-band EQ, built in chromatic tuner and Ovations exciter and compression/limiter circuitry.
The exciter is essentially a gain control on the side of the guitar, which gives your notes an added boost. Then, you can combine this with the compression function to really give your notes more sustain- whether you’re looking for a bit more punch in your high notes, or more resonance in your chords.
The patented pickup technology consists of six separate elements that sense both string and soundboard vibration. This should give you a better balance between the sounds of each string- no matter what gauge you’re using.
The Ovation 2077AX-CCB pro Legend is also part of the AX series of acoustic guitars, which are the same as the LX series, but at a more affordable price. It has a solid spruce top with underlying LX scalloped bracing, and the cutaway allows great access to the higher notes on the 20 fret, ebony fretboard.
The soundhole is inlayed with an oak leaf rosette, and along the neck are beautiful diamond shaped fret marker inlays. The neck also contains a dual-action truss rod, for precision adjustment, and carbon fibre stabilizers to the keep the neck in perfect alignment with the body.

What We liked
The solid sitka spruce top on this guitar really helps to produce clear, clean tones with plenty of note definition. The design of the body of this instrument means there is still clarity at higher volumes, without sounding too thin when you’re playing quietly. In many guitars, the amount of resonance and natural reverb increases as you play louder, which can muddy the high end if too overpowering. This guitar seems to have a good balance.
The ergonomically contoured body makes this guitar feel much easier to hold and smaller than it is. It also has a slightly shorter than average 25.25″ scale length, which combine to make this guitar very playable. Ovation acoustic guitars do tend to feel more like an electric anyway, and the 2077-CCB would be an excellent choice if you’re an electric player switching to acoustic.
The low action of the Ovation 2077AX-CCB Pro Legend is low enough so that you’re not having to strangle the neck for barre chords, but it doesn’t take away from the tone. The ‘deep-contour’ back makes up for any loss of resonance by creating a fuller, fatter sound than you would otherwise get.
I was also pleased to notice that this acoustic guitar comes with- not only a standard jack connection, but- an XLR output. This is the same as you would find on a microphone, and allows you to plug this instrument into a mixing desk, PA system, or similar.
As you may have guessed from the features on this guitar, things such as the inlaid oakleaf rosette, bound ebony fretboard and gold tuning pegs really show that Ovation have taken care over the construction of this guitar. It’s not all bells and whistles, either! The construction quality is top notch, with no obvious flaws.
The tuning stability is also excellent. It doesn’t seem to mind variations in humidity and temperature as much as some more temperamental acoustic guitars.
You may also like the extra features on the preamp system. When switched on, it increases the volume, attack and sustain to the higher notes. If you want to strum, this system will also tighten up your sound and adds more depth and resonance. All in all, this guitar can be quite loud- even when only playing acoustically!
What We didn’t like
Well, as with all ovations, the Ovation 2077AX-CCB Pro Legend works- and sounds- much better when plugged in than when playing just acoustically. Having said this, the difference isn’t as great as with some other ovation guitars- which is probably thanks to the deeper body.
This guitar is possibly not resonant enough, can sometimes sound thin (depending on what you’re playing, and the amp). If you’re after a pure acoustic tone, then there are other guitars out there that are better at being unamplified.
Conclusions on the Ovation 2077AX-CCB Pro Legend
The Ovation 2077AX-CCB Pro Legend is a fantastic sounding acoustic-electric guitar. Perfect for the electric guitarist transitioning to acoustic playing, or the gigging musician wanting something to gig or record with. Although it’s not the best guitar for an unplugged acoustic sound (if that’s what you really need).
